Courses in automata and kinetic art

Courses are a minimum of four x 3 hour sessions £360 (plus materials)
£660 for eight 3 hour sessions

Taster sessions £45/hr (2 hrs)

You will taught from a wide variety of skills: Besides metal and wood-work - silver soldering & brazing, electric and mechanical engineering, electronics & power supplies and Arduino coding.

Automata: Tuesday evenings 6.30 - 9.30, Kinetic: Thursday evenings: 6.30 - 9.30
Automata: Saturday mornings 10.00 - 1.00
Children up to 12 to be accompanied by an adult

Tom Wilkinson has a degree and teaching certificate. He currently part-time associate lecturer in Technical art at Wimbledon College of Art and kinetics at the Bartlett UCL.

He joined the contemporary automata scene around 1990 when he worked on The Ride of Life, the alternative theme park, for Cabaret Mechanical Theatre. He then went on to make the Sailor's Dream for Covent Garden and showed with them in Automata at The South Bank. For over he decade he made coin operated and collection box automata, often with Molly Fletcher, his wife and co-founder of Arts Republic. For over ten years their automata we sited at the V&A Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood. They have work at The MAD Museum and Marvin's Marvellous Mechanical Museum in Detroit.

Students are encouraged to bring with then an idea they wish to make. They will be taken throught the process of drawing, sketch modelling ans final construction.

You will be inducted into using lathes, mills and other bench power tools.
While at Kingsgate Workshops you will be covered by public liability insurance

2012 Henley Youth Festival - We performed the Energy Garden including our latest work the Solar Sphere where children add their decorated bottle to the solar powered sculpture

2011 Southend – Performed The Energy Garden Florascope as part of the Metal, End of Term show. This was an interactive show using pedal, wind, water and solar power

2010 Thames Festival – Performed The Florascope, a water powered sculpture on the banks of the Thames near The Oxo Tower. We worked with The House of FairyTales.
